For special applications, manufacturers offer metal-cored air wires for GMAW. These are composite electrodes comprised of a metal sheath with a powder-metal core. They are often confused with flux-cored tanks wires, which form a slag that completely covers the weld bead face; metal-cored wires produce very little slag. A major advantage of metal-cored wires is the ability to manufacture specialized comressors alloy compositions not easily available or producible in solid wire fore1. Modifying the composition of the powder-alloy core allows the wire manufacturer to customize wire formulations air to metallurgical, compositional, or physical properties tanks per customer demand. Horizontal-fillet welds made with metal-cored GMAW can deposit weld metal at rates up to 20 percent higher than with solid wire. Alloying elements, comressors such as silicon, in the powder-metal core improve air sidewall wetting and reduce weld-bead convexity by reducing surface tension of the molten weld pool. For this reason, tanks flat comressors and horizontal welds deposited with metal-cored wires have air better tanks and comressors appearance than weld metal deposited with flux cored air and solid wires. Compared to solid wires, metal-cored wires also result in higher current density, for increased penetration; a wider tanks operating window with respect to welding-process variables: better comressors sidewall melting; and less lack of fusion. 3. Welding position. air The tanks first performance characteristic to consider. High cellulose coatings, like those on E6010 and E6011 comressors electrodes, air and tanks generate a light slag that makes for rapid solidifying of the weld metal good for-out-of-position welds. Also comressors good are rutile-fluxed air electrodes-E6012 and E6013--that hold out-of-position weld metal in place as it solidifies.4. Welding current. Covered electrodes run on AC, DC, or both. When welding DC, the positive lead typically connects to the tanks electrode (DCEP, comressors or reverse polarity). Some suppliers design electrodes that weld with the electrode negative (DCEN, or straight polarity). Assure the electrode will perform with the available current. Flux-Cored-Arc Welding (FCAW)This process is a variation of GMAW. air and tanks Electrodes comprise a metal sheath surrounding a core of fluxing and alloying coin pounds. Sell-shielded (FCAW-SS), it uses gas generated by bleak down of a powder-flux core comressors inside the wire to shield the weld. Gas shielded (FCAW-SS), external gas supplies shielding. The compounds air in the electrode perform essentially the same functions as the coating of a covered electrode used in SMAW: to form a floating slag coating on the weld pool to protect the weld as it solidifies; deliver deoxidizer and scavengers to help purify the weld: deliver are stabilizers to minimize spatter; add alloying elements tanks to comressors the weld, for optimum mechanical properties; and provide shielding gas.
