 3. Welding position. The first performance characteristic to consider. High cellulose coatings, like those on E6010 and E6011 electrodes, generate a light slag that makes for rapid solidifying of the weld metal good for-out-of-position welds. Carbon content determines toughness and abrasion resistance--as carbon rises, abrasion resistance increases and toughness drops. Tungsten, a potent carbide former, also boosts high temperature strength, as does cobalt. Tougheners include nickel and manganese. Boron forms hard wear-resistance borides.
